Points have value, accounts contain identity data, and rewards can often be transferred or redeemed quickly. That makes a loyalty program a financial system as well as a marketing channel. Fraud controls need to protect both the balance sheet and the customer relationship.
Understand what is being stolen
Loyalty fraud includes account takeover, synthetic or duplicate accounts, stolen points, unauthorized transfers, promotion farming, receipt abuse, refund manipulation, employee collusion, and resale of rewards. Each pattern uses a different weakness, so one velocity limit cannot solve the whole problem.
The National Retail Federation reported that loyalty fraud was among the fraud methods retailers said were increasing. The business impact extends beyond the reward cost. Customers may lose confidence, service teams face difficult investigations, and aggressive controls can block legitimate redemption.
